The Vatican has revealed that Pope Leo has been treated for lung cancer after surgery to remove a growth this afternoon. Tests did reveal that it was a common form of lung cancer. The 71-year-old is being treated at a
hospital in Rome where he is expected to remain for a week to recover. Well, Sarah Reignsford is at the Vatican and this news will come as a shock to very many people. What more can you tell us? Yeah,
I think that's right. worrying news for Catholics around the world. We've just had a briefing here at the Vatican and they have confirmed to ush what they uh said in their statement which is that the the lump that
was uh removed from the pope's right lung was indeed cancerous as they said tests before the operation had suggested. Uh they said though that the operation was a success. Uh they said that doctors had removed the entire uh
lower lobe of the pope's right lung. Now they said that was uh to make the procedure more radical which a spokesman then explained to us was to ensure that nothing malignant was left behind. Certainly I think there are
further tests that remain to be done. We don't have the results of those yet. We may hear in the next few days. We're told that the operation itself took around 90 minutes. Uh the pope was in the operating
theater for around twice that length of time for 3 hours. Uh but certainly the the Vatican stressing that it was as far as it goes a successful operation. So some reassurance that they're trying to uh to give us
this evening to give Catholics who've been praying and and and following the pope in this uh journey uh for the past uh day. He appeared uh here at the hospital jelly hospital this afternoon to a big crowd of
people who were encouraging him sending their support and they have been praying throughout the day and I think they will continue to do Not.
